1. Presentation of the subject
Classical Russian Literature
19th century Russian Literature
The characteristics of the Russian world-the longings of the soul, its historical development-, expressed through Russian Literature. From an introduction to Ancient Russian Literature, the course will focus on the Classical Literature from the 19th century. Some incursions into Western Literature will be made, taking into account that the comparative itinerary is one of the goals of this course.

An approach to Russian Literature from the 19th century. |
Students will have knowledge of the opus of the main classics in 19th century Russian Literature. Likewise, they will acquire skills in analysing the authors' style and works according to the proposed curriculum. |
3. Contents
Unit 1. Introduction to the keys for the development of Russian Culture and Literature.
Unit 2. Pushkin. Psychologism and balance. A synthesis of the Russian and European past. The Prisioner of the Caucasus. Poetry.
Unit 3. Lermontov. Realism in Slavic Romanticism: A Hero of Our Time.
Unit 4. Gogol. Realism and Fantastic literature. The Coath (Shinel).
Unit 5. Dostoievsky. Anthropocentrism, mystic realism and tragic humanism. Polyphonic novel. Crime and Punishment.
Unit 6. Tolstoy. Ethical issues. The metaphysical in the rational. The Death of Ivan Ilich..
Unit 7: Chekov. Society and decadence. Pessimism, banality, scepticism: Short Stories.
