Objectius/Goals

Aquesta assignatura és una introducció a la semàntica i pragmàtica de les llengües naturals, tant pel que fa als temes i dades bàsics que han estat tradicionalment l'objecte d'estudi de la semàntica i pragmàtica formals, com pel que fa als paradigmes teòrics i metodològics desenvolupats en el seu àmbit. L'objectiu fonamental serà el de desenvolupar la capacitat del estudiant per analitzar fenòmens lingüístics des del punt de vista de la seva interpretació semàntica i pragmàtica.

This course is an introduction to natural language semantics and pragmatics, including the basic issues and data that have traditionally been the focus of study in formal approaches, the most influential theoretical frameworks, and the most commonly used research methodologies. The overall goal is to develop the student's ability to analyze natural language semantic and pragmatic phenomena.

Topics

· Basic properties of natural language as a semiotic system.
· The roles of content and context in meaning.
· Different approaches to the semantics/pragmatics boundary.
· Entailment, contradiction, and satisfaction conditions. Compositionality.
· Reference. Pronouns. Presupposition, specificity and definiteness.
· Quantification and binding. Contextual domain restriction.
· Varieties of context dependence: Indexicality, intensionality, etc.
· Formal approaches to discourse. Rhetorical and intentional structure.
· Information structure.
· Assertion and other dialog moves. Conventional vs. conversational implicature.
· Vagueness in lexical semantics: Aktionsart, Modification.
