English to Spanish 

El objetivo primordial del curso es reforzar el conocimiento activo de los alumnos mediante el ejercicio, eminentemente práctico, de la traducción inglés-castellano teniendo en cuenta que, por tratarse de estudiantes extranjeros, dicha traducción se considerará inversa.

Se trabajará con textos y documentos "reales" de un grado de dificultad adecuado y de temáticas muy variadas con el fin de proporcionar al alumno una experiencia lo más amplia posible en diferentes tipos de textos descriptivos, narrativos y expositivos.

Spanish to English 

The third-term Erasmus translation course will enable students to become familiar with translating in more specialised fields. The aims are as follows: a) to familiarise students with sophisticated reading and translating strategies when approaching specialised and technical texts; b) to transfer the awareness gained into sound practice when translating from Spanish into English; c) to aid students in making efficient use of a range of suitable reference works and specialised dictionaries and resources.

Contenidos

Se hará especial hincapié en los aspectos más problemáticos de la transferencia interlingüística, mediante la comparación de la lengua de llegada y la lengua de partida:

a) Barbarismos y calcos léxicos.

b) Barbarismos y calcos estructurales (morfológicos y sintácticos: uso del artículo, el género, la adjetivación, los tiempos verbales).

English to Spanish

Tras un comentario detallado del texto de partida, se analizarán en clase los resultados y grado de adecuación alcanzados en una primera versión realizada, en casa, por el alumno. Se valorará la corrección gramatical, el estilo, el tono, el registro, etc. en función de la modalidad discursiva del texto de partida.

Spanish to English

Classes will address a selected passage weekly from the student dossier, available from the OCE photocopying service. Students will be informed in advance as to which text we will be addressing. Each week three or four students will be required to work together preparing a translation of part of each text and bring it to class in electronic format (on a USB device or sent to an email address). During the class, the students will explain how they dealt with their text, what resources they used to help them with any specialised vocabulary and terms, and any other materials they used to help them during the translation process (parallel texts, technical guides, translation tools, etc.). The translation will be corrected in the class and the final version of all the translations studied will be made available over the Moodle platform.

The final overall course mark will be assessed on the basis of student participation in class and an end-of-term examination involving a translation passage of about 150 words.

You are reminded that NO changes to the June examination timetable will be permitted to accommodate Erasmus students who have made alternative plans for their summer mobility.

Felisa Manero will be responsible for assessing the English to Spanish component of the subject. Students will be required to pass both Spanish to English and English to Spanish tests in order to successfully complete the module
