In this course, we want to study architectural options in modern distributed communication systems and how signaling is done in these architectures. We start by giving a general overview on the features of centralized and distributed architectures and the different types of signaling. Then, we use examples of current system implementations to study those features and to show real-life solutions. The systems covered include SS7, H.323, SIP, IMS/GSM/UMTS, DNS, CDNs, and Publish-Subscribe.

The final exam and the practices have to be passed separately, each with a minimum grade of 5,0 to qualify for a final grade.
Exception: If all practical exercises/projects are handed in, the minimum grade necessary to pass the final exam is lowered to 4,5.
The course content is divided into two major blocks . These blocks are broken down into the following chapters:
Content block 1: Architecture options (4 weeks)
Content block 2: Signaling architectures (5 weeks)
