1. Presentation of the subject

The aim is to consolidate & practice English for Professional and Academic Purposes in an eminently practical approach, both within the context of Audiovisual Communication and with a view to students reaching the requirements of level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference.


3. Contents

Following a Topic-based approach, students will expand their lexical knowledge on 5 main Topics:

v English as a world language

v Education & Learning

v Work & Business

v Press & Media

v Arts & Cinema

Within these topic areas, students will gain confidence in the main Receptive and Productive Skills:

v Reading and use of strategies to improve understanding of adapted/authentic texts.

v Listening and use of strategies to improve competence in understanding native speakers.

v Speaking to gain confidence in giving efficient Oral Presentations and Interacting skills

v Writing to be able to produce Messages, Letters, Reviews, Articles, Opinion Essays, etc.

Each topic will have a subsequent set of activities, tasks and assignments (Oral and Written)

v English as a world Language (Profiles, Learning experiences & plans, Formal letters)

v Education & Learning (US/GB education systems, private vs. public education, a debate)

v Work & Business (Interviews, CV's & cover letters, Interacting in Meetings)

v Press & Media (News Broadcasts, Article and/or Opinion Essay, Analysisng Adverts)

v Arts & Cinema (Film Reviews, Presenting a scene, video clips, describing film processes)

4. Assessment

Student evaluation will be based on a mixture of continuous assessment (40%), consisting of 4 main Oral & Written set assignments, a final exam (40%) and class attendance/participation (20%).

6. Metodology

The lectures will have a combination of teacher-led activities, including grammar input, topic-based vocabulary acquisition, reading, listening and audiovisual exercises, whereas the Seminars will be more learner-centered with a greater focus on group/pair work Oral & Written tasks and assignments contextualized in professional and/or academic uses.

Materials will be drawn from a variety of course books, grammars, on-line sources, films and clips. Participants will be encouraged to become autonomous learners.
