1. Presentation of the subject
A study and interpretation of artistic creativity in the Russian aesthetic tradition, from the icons to the 20th century, with an analysis of the following issues: Art as a symbol, the educative role of Art and the moral responsibility of the artist.

Students shall have some fundamental ideas about the philosophy of the Russian icon, as well as about the thought and the works of the proposed authors, and will be able to express those ideas. |
3. Contents
Unit 1. Introduction. The byzantine roots of the Russian aesthetic tradition. Art as knowledge. ICONS.
Unit 2. TOLSTOY. Art and Literature as a research of the Truth. Ethical concerns and pessimism.
Unit 3. KANDINSKY. About the spiritual element in the arts.
Unit 4. MALEVICH. Art as a construction of an objectless world.
Unit 5. TARKOVSKY. Cinema and its rapport with other artistic forms. The transforming power of Art.
