1. Presentation of the subject

  1. The subject aims to be a general introduction to French literature from the classical period up to the end of the 19th century (20th century literature will be studied later in the degree). This introductory course will basically involve literary genres and movements.
  2. The subject aims to familiarize students with knowledge that they will be able to apply to other national and foreign literatures. It will also give access to those French literary texts which are essential to the education for students of Humanities in their original language.
  3. The subject fundamentally focuses on text analysis, that is, the capacity to identify literary aspects in texts and to define internal structure and textual composition.

4.   In order to take this course, students need to have taken French Language or already have French knowledge (from other sources). Since there was a reduction in the amount of hours dedicated to French Language, the texts used in French Literature will include Catalan or Spanish translations.

1. Learning to "read" a literary text in French (or translated), that is, having reading skills along with aesthetic knowledge and analytical capacities.

2. Assimilating basic knowledge on French literature, which is part of a humanistic culture.

3. Learning how to relate French literature to other literatures.

4. Learning how to relate French literature to French art of the same period.

5. Being capable to make reasoned value judgements in text analysis

6. Improving French language skills, including expressive strategies.

7. Learning to talk about text analysis in public.

8. Learning to work in small groups in text analysis.
