1. Introduction to the course

This course will be centred on the relationship between the State, civil society and economic activity from a theoretical and empirical point of view. An important component will be the relation between the social and economic phenomenon on the one hand and the political on the other. As part of this analysis the social and economic state of Catalonia, Spain, Europe and the world will be studied within the different political contexts that define them.

The course's main objective is to analyze the great contemporary debates by studying the relationship between the economic context and the socio-political context, focusing particularly on the welfare state.

  

2. Competences to be achieved

Capacity of analysis and synthesis, ability to manage information, ability to communicate with experts from different areas, ability to learn.

3. Contents

The main theories on the welfare state, the impact of the globalization of the economy on the welfare states, European integration. The economic and social situation in Catalonia, Spain, and the European Union.

4. Assessment

Combination of continuous assessment and final examination.

Discussion Forums will be created in the "Aula Global" to complement classroom based activities. The teacher will moderate the debates, encouraging participation and ensuring comments are good and respectful. All students will be able to benefit from their peers as well as from the contributions made by the teacher.

  

6. Methodology

The theoretical classes will be complemented with non classroom based practical sessions via the discussion forums set in the "Aula Global". The recommended readings will also be important.
