1. Presentation of the course
The syllabus for the joint degree course in Medicine of Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) has as one of its main goals the provision of an integrated training in medical knowledge, so that the biological bases of medicine and clinical disciplines should not be considered as self-contained subjects viewed in isolation. For this reason, a group of subjects was included in the syllabus under the title Integrated Biomedicine I, II, III and IV and will be taught during the first four years of the degree course.
Integrated Medicine is, then, the title given to the subjects designed to present health-related problems in a transversal way, whether from a horizontal or vertical approach. This means that not only do students need to achieve educational objectives for the subjects corresponding to their own year of study, but also for subjects from previous or subsequent years.  This obviously means that the degree course is considered to be an inseparable whole, and not just a juxtaposition of six years of study.  In other words, students will need to understand some concepts which in theory correspond to subjects from subsequent years, and, at a later point, will return to concepts from the previous years which they should already have assimilated.
These subjects are intended then to provide a context for the development of basic generic skills, which in some cases will be dealt with implicitly in other subjects but which require specific activities such as those which will be undertaken during the Integrated Medicine course.

2. Competences to be achieved
- To learn about the structure of the cellular function, and the characteristics of biomolecules, their metabolism, regulation and metabolic integration.
- To describe the bases of cellular communication and the behaviour of excitable membranes.
- To learn about the morphology, structure and functioning of the cellular membrane.

- To learn about the morphology, structure and function of the excretory system.
- To learn about the morphology, structure and function of the endocrine system.
- To learn about the morphology, structure and function of the central and peripheral nervous system.
- To understand the principle of the risk factor and its importance in the prevention of illness.
- To understand scientific texts and to interpret them critically.
- To identify, diagnose, and plan the treatment of the main endocrine system diseases.
- To identify, diagnose, and plan the treatment of the main central and peripheral nervous system diseases. 






- To identify, diagnose, and plan the treatment of the main diseases of the blood.

- To identify, diagnose, and plan the treatment of the main kidney and urinary diseases.

- To identify, diagnose, and plan the treatment of the main psychiatric disorders.

- To learn the indications of biochemical, haematological, immunological, microbiological, anatomopathological, and image-based tests.

- To value the benefit/risk relationship in diagnostic and therapeutic processes.
- To learn the fundamental bases of pharmacology for the different body organs and systems.
- To learn how to manage the dynamics of group work.
- To learn to organize personal working time.  

- To make an oral and written public presentation, in the form of scientific projects and/or professional reports.
 
3. Contents
During the period of the course the students will be required to solve four problems,to which they will dedicate two weeks per problem (except case 4, to which they will dedicate three weeks):
- Case 1. Julia doesn't feel well.
- Case 2. Rolling stone
- Case 3. Nerves
- Case 4. Pale face
 
4. Assessment
The assessment process will take into account the following activities:
- Final examination (60% of the final mark):  consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions which will form part of the regular end-of-term examination (40%) and of a written problem-solving test (20%).
- Case reports (40%):
Cases 1 and 2: individual reports (written presentation)
Case 3: group report (written presentation)
Case 4: group report (oral presentation)

6. Methodology

This subject will be conducted in Problem Based Learning (ABP) format.  This method, which has been used at UPF since 2003, involves students working on a problem or case, alone or in groups, during a two-week period, under the supervision of their tutor.
