1. Presentation of the subject

The myth of the Holy Grail in Literature and in Art

A study of the appearance of the Grail myth in 12th century Europe in the works of the Champagne author Chrétien de Troyes. An analysis of the text and of the manuscript tradition (miniatures) to verify the intense horizon of expectations generated by this piece of work in the rewriting of the myth both in French and in German between the years 1190 and 1230, approximately. This is the period over which the myth inherited by posterior centuries was developed. Wagner's liturgical drama will be seen as a milestone for the transmission, during the 20th century, of the myth, carried on especially in cinematography.
