1. Presentation of the subject

A study and interpretation of the relations between Politics and Mass Culture in the contemporary world: the Chinese and Japanese case in a comparative perspective.

·    Understanding and interpreting in a well-reasoned and appropriate fashion written texts and spoken speeches and other documents (images, maps, etc.) of an academic nature.

·    Justifying with consistent arguments one's own opinions and defending them in public, in front of an expert or uninitiated audience.

·    Using the computing tools, with their corresponding applications, necessary for the academic and professional activity in the Humanities.

·    Being able to work in a group, respecting differing opinions in a pluralist, tolerant frame.

·    Applying and adapting with flexibility and creativity the acquired knowledge to new contexts and situations.

·    Searching, selecting and elaborating information and contents.



·    Knowing and using in a well-reasoned fashion the conceptual frames of critical analysis of mass communication and popular cultures.

·    Analytical reflection skills on the cultural implications and the social impact of globalisation in different societies, with a special attention on the Chinese sphere and on our most immediate reality.

·    Identifying the most relevant events in the contemporary history of the Chinese sphere.

·    Knowing the changes produced in the forms of mass communication and popular culture in the Chinese sphere.

·    Relating the political, social and economical traits in the contemporary Chinese spheres and in our most immediate reality with the forms of mass communication and popular cultures in this period.

·    Analysing the social impact of the media and the technological tools of mass popular culture and communication (written journalism, written or audiovisual fiction subgenres, Internet, cinema, pop music, television) in the Chinese sphere and in our most immediate reality.

·    Comparing the development of mass culture in the contemporary Chinese sphere with the processes of our most immediate reality.
