1. Presentation of the subject

The aim of the subject is to help students to approach artistic manifestations from the eighties onwards. The subject will focus on different tendencies, aesthetic conceptions and topics, paying special attention to paintings. It will also give importance to their historical, cultural and social context with the purpose of arousing student's interest in current works of art and increasing their analytical mind when appreciating different artistic creations.

2. Competences to be attained

•- Acquiring the basic knowledge about art history after 1980.

•- Understanding basic terms and concepts related to the subject

•- Having an analytical mind when examining works of art

A. Historical Itinerary

1. Introduction.

German Neo-Expressionism. Italian Transavantgarde. Art after Franco. 

3. Post-Modernity in the USA(1980-1985).

Appropriation, Neo-Expresionism. Graffitti.

4. USA - Europe (1985-1990).

North-American Simulationists. European 'neos': Neo-Geo, Neo-Baroque, Neo-Conceptual. 

5. The diversity of discourses (1985-).

Activist Art. Body rhethorics. Exploring sexual difference. Multiculturalism.
