1. Presentation of the subject

Latin Literature is one of the subjects (along with Latin Language I, II and III) that provide the students of Humanities with the fundamental knowledge on Latin language and literature.

The Latin language has been, up to the Modern Ages, the main vehicle of European culture, both in literature and in other fields of knowledge (such as philosophy, history, law, sciences and so on). Latin is the origin to almost all the romance lexis and constitutes, along with Greek, the basis for scientific terminology. The study of etymology provides the first meaning of words and tries to explain the changes that they have experienced.

Both Latin and Greek literary pieces of work are still considered relevant and interesting. The classics have been used as models or inspiration in many literary productions until present day.

Thus, this group of subjects aim to: a) improve Latin knowledge; b) introduce etymology and semantics of romance lexis; c) study the literary genres, the main authors and their influence on the occidental literary tradition.

In Latin Literature students will acquire two different types of knowledge: on the one hand, they will make progress regarding the Latin language, which they first acquired in the subject Latin Language I; on the other hand, they will be introduced to Latin literature through the study of the main prose writers: Caesar, Cicero and T. Livi. The texts written by these authors will be studied and commented as well as translated.
