1. Presentation of the subject

This subject will use a humanistic perspective to introduce the most relevant themes and debates related to human geography. Special attention will be drawn to aspects which deal with philosophy, art, literature and history.

In Human Geography, students will have to establish connections between geography in societies and environment and territory features. Students will study population, economic activities and rural and urban landscapes. They will also be introduced to the theory and the methodological analysis in geography and to the study of the world as an interdependent and unequal entity. Students will have to identify the main elements of territory differentiation in a planetary scale.

• Unit 1: The concept of globalization: development and dependency.

• Unit 2: Models of production organisation: Fordism, Post-Fordism.

• Unit 3: Sustainability and natural resources management.

 Block 2:  Political Geography

• Unit 1: Geography of states, frontiers, geopolitical blocks and geopolitical models.

• Unit 2: The concept of State and Nation. Nationalisms.

  Block 3: Cultural Geography

• Unit 1: Colonialism, Post-Colonialism, Imperialism.

• Unit 2: Orientalism and colonial imaginaries.

• Unit 3: Travel literature (seminar sessions).

• Unit 4: Identity, space and gender.

• Unit 5: The concept of landscape and cultural landscape.

• Unit 6: Visual arts and geography (practical seminar).

Block 4: Urban Geography

• Unit 1: The process of urbanization.

• Unit 2: Urban Morphology. City and identity.

• Unit 3: Public spaces, design and social dynamics (practical seminar).

Block 5: Population Geography

• Unit 1: Population distribution. Trends and current tendencies.

• Unit 2: Demographic dynamics.

• Unit 3: Migrations.

Block 6: Geography of economic activities

• Unit 1: Economic development.

• Unit 2: Rural areas. The agricultural landscapes.
