Syllabus
Constitutional and European Law forms part of the Degree in Labour Relations and is therefore within the Social Sciences framework.
This course is studied in the second term of the first year of the degree and its aim is to introduce students to the fundamental aspects of Spanish constitutional law and European law.
The course is divided into two parts. The first is devoted to the study of constitutional law, with 7 whole-group lectures and 2 seminars per sub-group, where the major issues in constitutional law are presented. Following a brief introduction to constitutionalism in a broad sense, the drawing up of the Spanish constitution is studied. The main principles of the constitutional system are analysed, including the division of powers, constitutional justice, the sources of law, and basic rights.
The second part is devoted to the study of European law, once again with 7 whole-group lectures and 2 seminars per sub-group. This section presents the major characteristics of European law, in particular European community law and European Union law. The phenomenon of European integration and its development and main characteristics are discussed as well as the current structure in term of institutions, areas of jurisdiction and regulation of the European communities and the European Union, and the specific rules governing the relationship between European community law and the internal laws of member states.
Students on the course will be required to read and understand legal texts and to develop the ability to apply theoretical notions to real cases.
