1. Introduction to the course

The subject Administrative Law for the Degree in Political and Administration Sciences seeks to offer students an initial approach to this discipline and provide an introduction to the relevant basic institutions and the rationale behind them.  The course programme allows students to gain an overview of the most important issues related to how Public Administrations work in a democratic welfare state with rule of law and offers the opportunity to analyse them.

2. Competencies to be achieved

At the end of the course students should have acquired the following competencies:

-          Ability to critically analyse juridical texts.

-          Ability to write using juridical terms on the topics studied.

-          Ability to work in a group.

-          Ability to present orally.

3. Contents

The topics studied and analysed in this course are: the administrative legal system, the processes of public administration action, hiring and personnel selection systems, the civil service system and finally public administration authority.

4. Assessment

Assessment of the course will combine continuous evaluation (exercises, coursework and oral presentations in seminars) and a final exam.

6. Methodology

The teaching methodology will combine classroom based activities, such as lectures, seminars and tutorials, together with non classroom based ones, that is, individual coursework, group work and autonomous study.

7. Programme of Activities

Week 1: lecture and readings recommended by teachers.

Week 2: lecture.

Week 3: lecture and seminar to correct the exercise set based on the recommended readings.

Week 4: lecture and presentation of the exercise for the following seminar.

Week 5: lecture.

Week 6: lecture and solution of the previously set exercise.

Week 7: lecture and reading recommended by teacher.

Week 8: lecture.

Week 9: lecture. Topic 9. Public administration and public policy / Seminar. Practical exercise.

Week 10: lecture and seminar to correct the exercise set based on the recommended readings.
