1. Presentation of the subject

The aim of this subject is to understand the central themes which form the main artistic traditions from Modernity to the present time. The artistic and intellectual works that have had an impact on these traditions will be studied. The purpose of the subject is to increase the student's awareness of the changes which have taken place in art theory and practice during the last century and a half and which enable to explain the current situation of aesthetics and art.

1. Understand theoretical and informative texts with a critical awareness.

2. Be able to expose the content of a text in a correct and clear way. Be able to review texts according to specific analysis criteria.

3. Prepare readings and think about them before seminars and learn paying attention to other student's contributions.

4. Learn how to get information about a topic and have oral and written skills to explain it.

5. Relate theoretical humanistic knowledge to an understanding of the present.

 

1. Know the main texts and discourses which form the complex idea of artistic Modernity.

2. Know the main artistic traditions from the beginning of Modernity onwards.

3. Have no prejudices when thinking about the latest art. Know some of the current exhibitions and relate them to artistic paradigm shifts during Modernity.

4. Be able to critically evaluate an artistic project, bearing in mind its historical importance and its current impact. Introduction to contemporary art criticism.

1. The noisy arrival of "Modernities". Towards new aesthetics. Baudelaire, Manet.

Walter Benjamin and the loss of aura. Historicity of (aesthetic) experience.

2. Definitions and problems about the art form in Modernity.

3. Originality and Avant-garde.

4. Time for the public. Theory of reception and aesthetic experience. Towards a theory of art criticism.

5. Art and ideology. Critical theory.

6. Arts of discomfort. From situationism to performance.

7. Art against modern visuality (Foucault, Foster, Jones).

8. Apocalypse. Evaporation of arts and its concept (Michaud).

9. The concept of Post-Modernity.

10. The integrated. Relational art, a new aesthetic paradigm? (Bourriaud)
