1. Presentation of the subject

St. John of the Cross in context

The aim of this subject is to offer an in-depth reading of St. John of the Cross' texts (1542-1591). They will be put into context, both in the Hispanic and the European (especially Renish and Flemish) spiritual movements. The time frame, from the 12th to the 16th centuries, will reach the 20th century in order to understand the poet/mystic's reception, especially in visual and plastic arts.

1) Studying the elements, fundamental problems, historical episodes, movements and outstanding authors of European and Spanish spirituality (12th-16th centuries).

2) Develop our own criteria when reading religious texts.

2) Becoming familiar, identifying and understanding the fundamental bibliography about St. John of the Cross.

3) Becoming familiar, understanding and relating the fundamental bibliography about European medieval spirituality.
