Protohistory of the Mediterranean (1^st millenium B.C.)

Study and interpretation of the fundamental episodes, as well as the assumptions and consequences, of the ancient Mediterranean world.

Program

1. The crisis of 1200 B.C. in Eastern Mediterranean and the collapse of empires. The invasion of "pobles del mar" ("sea towns").
2. The transition to the first millennium in Anatolia, Syria and Palestine. The reorganisation of international trade: Cyprus and Phoenicia.
3. Central Mediterranean at the end of the second millennium: two Italian cultures, "subapenínica" and "protovilanoviana".
4. The Vilanovan and orientalizing Iron Age in Italy. The Etruscans: the formation of the cities in Etruria and Lazio. The origins of Rome.
5. The Phoenician expansion to the Centre and Eastern Mediterranean. The founding of Cartago and Cadiz and its consequences.
6. The Iberian Peninsula and Tartessians.
