1. Presentation of the subject

This subject will be divided into two parts. The first one will study Greek art's stylistic basics in their cultural context through Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic architecture and sculpture, emphasizing the connection between the works of art and philosophical, religious and social aspects. The second one will study the connection between art and myth in Greek art and the survival of their formal and significant elements as well as their reworking in Post-Classical Western culture.

3. Contents

Unit 1.

Understanding Greek culture through its basic concepts. Connections between art and myth.

Unit 2.

Greek architecture. The Greek temple. Architectural orders. Classical architecture. The Acropolis of Athens. Hellenistic architecture. Urbanism.

Unit 3

Archaic sculpture. From the Conceptual style to Naturalism. Major works of Archaic sculpture.

Unit 4.

Classical sculpture. Naturalism. Philosophical principles upholding the idealised naturalism in the Classical Period. Major sculptures and works of the Classical Period.

Unit 5.

Hellenistic sculpture. The Hellenistic paradigm shift. Formal and significant features of the Hellenistic sculpture throughout its major works of art.

Unit 6.

The survival of Greek forms and classical myths throughout Western art history. Reworking Greek myths through art from the medieval period onwards.
