Linguistic aspects of plagiarism in literary translation (English-Catalan; English-Spanish)

Objectives

This course will consider the different forms adopted by a number of grammatical, semantic and pragmatic structures of English throughout its various historical periods, paying particular attention to the Early Modern period. The approach taken involves contrastive analysis of the data derived from the analysis of plagiarism in literary translation (English-Spanish; English-Catalan). The general aim is to help the student identify specific areas of contrast between English and any of the working A languages, and understand the meaning, and use in context of these structures in order to be able to solve translation problems.

Course work and grading

The course has a theory component and a practical component, each of which corresponds to one session per week. The final course grade will be determined as follows: 50% will be based on the final exam and 50% on weekly tasks and assignments

Week 1: A brief historical introduction to English.

Week 2: Variation in word order in different periods of the history of English.

Week 3: Forms and syntax: nouns.

Week 4: Forms and pragmatics: pronouns. Forms of address.

Week 5: Forms and syntax: verbs.

Week 6: Forms and syntax: adjectives

Week 7: The importance of prepositions.

Week 8: Subjects and complements: their syntax and pragmatics (1).

Week 9: Subjects and complements: their syntax and pragmatics (2).

Week 10: Puns.
