Syllabus
On completing the course students will have the ability to question, create and use indicators of the social and political reality of the world we live in and will also be capable of analysing basic related research designs. In this way they will be able to formulate critical analyses and comparisons of specific phenomena in various contexts and at different times.
In our information society and within a context of the increasing use of quantitative data in all fields, being able to deal with numbers is a basic and vital cross-disciplinary skill in all fields. The incorporation of this course and of Mathematical tools and data analysis (which is taught in the third term) into the Criminology syllabus therefore aims to supply students with the basic quantitative and mathematical tools needed to successfully undertake the study of the different subjects which are taught on the degree and to provide them with analytical abilities and an understanding of reality which will be useful to them in their future careers.
This is an introductory and applied course. To acquire the skills taught, it is an advantage to have studied Mathematics for the Social Sciences at secondary school. Students who studied Humanities in bachillerato and so did not study mathematics will be able to pass the course fairly easily, but will have to make more effort than their fellow students, as their basic knowledge will need reinforcing.
