1. Presentació de l'assignatura o descriptor
En aquesta assignatura s'estudia la representació literària de la frontera americana des del període colonial fins al present. Tenint en compte que la frontera continua sent un dels mites més poderosos en la consciència col·lectiva de molts americans, el curs analitza la manera en què la literatura ha contribuït, d'una banda, a la construcció i prevalença d'aquest mite, i, per altra, a la seva crítica. Els textos comentats a classe abasten alguns dels temes recurrents de la literatura sobre la frontera: la dicotomia Est-Oest, la representació dels nadius americans i les dones a la frontera, el mite del cowboy, la relació entre violència, individualisme i frontera, l'ús ideològic del paisatge nord-americà, i el qüestionament del mite de la frontera en la literatura escrita per dones, indígenes nord-americans i xicanos. A més d'analitzar diverses obres representatives (incloent les pel·lícules "The Searchers" i "Brokeback Mountain") , en finalitzar el curs els estudiants han de ser capaços d'identificar els principals trets associats amb aquest tipus de literatura, notar la diferència entre el mite i la realitat de la frontera, i avaluar la seva actual importància a l'Amèrica contemporània.

Comprendre la diferència terminològica entre conceptes com frontier, contact zone, borderlands, etc. •4. Fer esquemes i/o resums de textos que llegeixen i/o conferències que escolten. •5. Escriure textos breus sobre les idees que més han destacat d'un text que han llegit i/o escoltat. •6. Parlar anglès amb prou bona fluïdesa i pronunciació per tal que l'oient pugui entendre bé el missatge. •7. Seguir conferències llargues en anglès (de 45 a 60 minuts) sense perdre's. •8. Acostumar-se als diferents accents, registres i lèxics de l'anglès parlat i escrit relacionat amb la frontera i l'Oest •9. Agafar apunts mentre escolta una conferència en anglès. •10. Extreure el significat de textos complicats (buscant-ne l'estructura, funció dels diferents paràgrafs i seccions, idees principals, lligams entre idees, etc.) •11. Conèixer els autors més representatius i els gèneres més comuns de la literatura nord-americana relacionats amb el mite de la frontera. •12. Conèixer i aplicar les normes retòriques de les cultures angloparlants a l'hora d'escriure textos acadèmics, com assaigs. •13. Escriure paràgrafs ben estructurats segons les normes retòriques de les cultures angloparlants. |

UNIT 1. One or Many? Theorizing and Defining the American Frontier.
Comparing and contrasting related terms: frontier, border, borderlands, frontera. The frontier in modern American political discourse. From the "Turner Thesis" to Slotkin's "Regeneration through violence". Theories challenging the Frontier: from the Frontier to the Borderlands.
UNIT 2. Captives, Indians, Settlers: Early American Frontier Literature
Representations of the frontier in colonial American literature. The "captivity narrative" as a frontier literary genre: Mary Rowlandon. Crevecoeur's Letters. American Romanticism and its views on the frontier. James Fenimore Cooper.
UNIT 3. Poetry and the Discourse of Westward Expansion.
The poetical representation of the frontier in the early national period: Philip Freneau. Poetry and Romanticism: Bryant and the fireside poets. Whitman and "Manifest Destiny".
UNIT 4. On the Trail: Travel Writing and the Frontier Experience
The main routes of westward exploration. Wagon trains versus cattle drives. The transcontinental railroad. The epic discourse of westward exploration. Twain and the satirical exploration of the journey to the West.
UNIT 5. Folk Heroes: the Frontier and Popular Literature
Naturalism, realism and the "official" closing of the frontier. Dime novels and pulp stories: the emergence of the western as popular fiction.
UNIT 6. The Hollywood Frontier: the Western
From silent movies to blockbusters: the celluloid-driven globalization of cowboy stories. A close analysis at John Ford's The Searchers. Its relation to frontier literature and the captivity narrative tradition.
UNIT 7. The Female Experience of the Frontier in American Literature

4. Avaluació
Els estudiants han de redactar dos treballs en anglès per a aquesta assignatura, un per a cada professor, i cadascun d'aquests treballs equivadrà a un 15% de la nota final. El tema i les instruccions per a cada treball es donaran a classe i/o s'anunciaran a l'aula global durant el trimestre. També hi haurà un examen final obligatori per a tothom (equivalent al 60% de la nota final) i una nota de participació (equivalent al 10% de la nota final).

6. Metodologia (optatiu)
Aquesta assignatura s'imparteix en anglès i segueix una metodologia comunicativa que fa que es posi èmfasi en la comprensió lectora, la comprensió auditiva i la producció escrita dels estudiants. És per aquest motiu que és imprescindible que els estudiants matriculats tinguin un bon domini de la llengua anglesa i hagin assolit com a mínim el nivell B1 en el Marc Europeu Comú de Referència per a les Llengües. També és molt important que els estudiants preparin la lectura dels textos amb prou antelació, atesa la complexitat i extensió que de vegades poden tenir. L'aproximació a la matèria, tot i basar-se essencialment en textos, serà transversal i multidisciplinar, amb incursions en els àmbits del cinema i la pintura.
