1. Presentació de l'assignatura o descriptor

Anàlisi de l'evolució de la ciutat i de l' urbanisme al llarg del temps i a diferents espais geogràfics. La ciutat com expressió de les diferents cultures i civilitzacions i la seva relació amb els moviments artístics i socials occidentals.

Estudi del fenomen urbà des del punt de vista històric i social, de la seva elaboració cultural i de les seves ressonàncies simbòliques.

Revisió del textos fonamentals sobre teoria urbana.

3. The Political City (the City in the Ancient World)

4. The City of Merchants (the medieval, renaissance, and baroque city)

4. Avaluació/ Class assessment

•·         Two individual analyses of the readings, conferences, videos, visits and fieldtrips of the first four weeks of the course (15 % each).

•·         First paper from the materials of the first 5weeks of the course.

•·         Second paper from the readings of the last 4 weeks of the course. The readings will be assigned and include a brief oral presentation to start a class discussion. 

•·         Group project: preparation of a blog for an urban itinerary in Barcelona. (25% of the grade).

•·         Forum participation: Participation in the course forums or class discussions(15%)

•·         Final Exam (key concepts and readings). 30%

To be able to take the exam all the students must have the two individual papers and the group project.

The students that do not pass the course, will have a second option exam (40%), and should have the two individual papers (15% each).

6. Metodologia (optatiu)

 Classes plenàries utilitzant el portal de geografies que està accessible als estudiants durant tot el curs. Sessions de discussió i debat d'alguns dels materials del curs: mapes, material audiovisual i textos. Seguiment dels debats en el espai Forum de Moodle

Tres sessions de seminari en els que els estudiants en grups de fins a tres persones presentaran el resultats de les pràctiques assignades en relació a diferent temes durant el curs.

Visites urbanes i si és possible un viatge a alguna de les ciutats estudiades en classe.
