Course objectives
The second-term translation course builds on, and consolidates, the work undertaken in the corresponding second-term course held in the previous year. The learning objectives are as follows: a) to familiarise students with basic reading and translating strategies (inluding error-correction activities and comparative translation analysis) when approaching rather more 'sophisticated' texts on the informative, narrative and descriptive levels, b) to transfer the awareness gained into sound practice when translating from Spanish into English, c) to cover as wide a range as possible of grammatical, lexical and syntactical options available in the light of the discursive potential of the ST and TT, and d) to aid students in making proper use of a range of suitable reference works.
Methodology
Both GG and S classes will address a selected passage, or passages, weekly from the corresponding class dossiers. Passages will be selected for class preparation and both classes will address individual student responses in an effort to encourage self- and peer-correction in preparation for the final version of the translated text. Priority will be given to addressing issues of grammar, style, tone and register in the light of the contrasts between the ST and TT. Active participation is welcomed and expected, particularly in the Seminar group format, when selected members of the class will be expected to lead the Seminar each week.
Assessment
a) Two translation passages will be set for continuous assessment during the course. Each translation will count for 20% of the final overall course mark (total 40%)
b) The end-of-term examination will involve a longer passage for translation, counting for the remaining 60% of the final overall course mark. One suitable Spanish/English dictionary may be used in the examination.

Students are advised that there is no substitute at this stage for close and extensive reading in the target language, allied, naturally, to the exercise of thought. Where any combination of these proves inadequate, salvation may be sought in an imaginative use of the following standard reference works, available for consultation in the Library:
