Course objectives

The learning goals of the first-term Erasmus Spanish to English translation course are: a) to familiarise students with basic reading and translating strategies when approaching simple texts on the more informative, narrative and descriptive levels, b) to transfer the awareness gained into sound practice when translating from Spanish into English, c) to cover as wide a range as possible of grammatical, lexical and syntactical options available in the light of a close contrastive analysis of the ST and TT, and d) to aid students in making proper use of a range of suitable reference works

Methodology

Classes will address a selected passage or passages weekly from the relevant Student Dossier, on sale in the OCE Photocopying Service. Passages will be selected for class preparation and the G group session will address the individual student responses in an effort to encourage self- and peer-correction in preparation for the final version of the translated text. Priority will be given to addressing issues of grammar, style, tone, register and possible ambiguities in the light of the discursive potential of the ST. The final version of the translation will be made available retroactively via Campus Global.

Assessment

The course will be assessed via an end-of-term examination involving translation of two short passages, one from English into Spanish and one from Spanish into English. You are reminded that NO changes to the December examination timetable will be permitted to accommodate Erasmus students who may have made alternative plans for their Christmas mobility. It is anticipated that results will be published and the corresponding Examination Review held well before the end of the first-term examination period.
