A. Grammar and lexis
1. Revision of key grammatical and lexical structures that the students
already dealt with in previous Llengua C and GAD C courses:
- False friends. Words easily confused.
- Verb tenses.
- Conditionals. Unreal past. The
Subjunctive.
- Modal verbs. Reported speech.
- The Articles. Countability.
- Relative clauses. Finite
(that-clauses) and non-finite (to-infinitive and ing clauses) complementation
- Making comparisons; Nouns/Adjectives followed by prepositions
- Phrasal verbs; Prepositional verbs
- Linking words; Reference (it; this, that, these, those; such; so)
- Word formation. Collocations
2. Essential structure: exercises designed to raise awareness of how the
language is constructed.
3. Manipulating language: exercises involving rewriting English
sentences without changing the meaning to raise awareness of the different
structural and lexical options as a prelude to translating.
4. Text analysis: reading and commenting on texts chosen to illustrate
specific grammatical, lexical or cultural points of the kind likely to create
problems in translation.
Active skills
1. Reading a wide variety of text-types designed to raise awareness of
the possibilities of written discourse.
2. Writing based on the texts. Individual work.
3. Speaking: mainly discussion of issues raised
by the texts.
4. Listening: video-based activities dealing with the topics raised by the texts.
