The main periods of world economic growth. Economic growth, globalization and convergence.

Tema 2. Economic integration during the last third of the nineteenth century (1870-1914)

Factor movements: international migrations, international trade and policy and foreign investment. The gold standard and the stability of the international monetary system. The second industrial revolution and changing economic leadership: Britain, Germany and the United States. Overseas developments.

Tema 3. World War I and the failure of the postwar reconstruction, 1914-1929

The heritage of World War I. War reparations and monetary disorder: German hyperinflation. Attempts of monetary stabilization and the return to the gold standard: a comparison between Britain and France. Growth and fluctuations in the world economy in the Twenties. The primary goods export economies: challenges and responses.

Tema 4. The Great Depression of the Interwar years, 1929-1939

The start of the depression in the United States and its international diffusion. The causes of the Great Depression: monetarists versus keynesianists. The impact of the Depression: Europe, Latin America and Asia. Recovery patterns and policies: case studies.

Tema 5. The golden years of capitalism and its foundations

World War II and the reconstruction success, 1939-1950: Bretton Woods and the Marshall Plan. The golden age: growth factors. The new liberal order. International migrations. World trade and GATT. Capital flows under Bretton Woods. A comparative perspective of economic growth: Eastern Europe, South America, Asia and Africa. The import substitution industrializations.

Tema 6. The new phase of the world economy: stagflation, 1973-1985

The precedents: the collapse of the Bretton Woods monetary system and the rigidities in the labor markets. The cartelization of the oil market: the OPEC. The oil shocks. Adjustment policies: Europe, Japan and the United States. The debt problem: foreign indebtment and backwardness. The deceleration of the planned economies and its causes. Growing in a world in crisis: the exceptional case of the East Asian countries.

Tema 7. Towards a globalized world economy, 1985-2002

The crossroads of the 1980s. The building of a new economic policy and its outcomes. The collapse of the socialist planned economies and the transition to capitalist market based systems.
