AMERICAN SHORT FICTION (S. XIX-XX)

Objectius

The course will examine short fiction by a number of writers whose work has shaped the American short story, from its beginnings to the present day. Along with a discussion of the stories selected the course will address issues concerning the short story as a literary genre and consider its development as a kind of "national" art form in the twentieth century while examining the influence of European early practitioners like Chekhov and Maupassant. The authors discussed range from Edgar Poe to Raymond Carver and special attention is devoted to works by Henry James, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner and Joyce Carol Oates.
