Economia del Benestar i Distribució de Rendes(11856) 

Tema 1. Competitive equilibrium and Pareto optimum. The first and the second welfare theorems.

Tema 2. Partial equilibrium: consumer surplus, competitive equilibrium, and Pareto optium.

Tema 3. Measurement of inequality: Lorentz curves, Dalton's principle of transfers. The Gini index and other indeces.

Tema 4. Social Welfare functions.

Tema 5. Taxation: goals of the government, and how to achieve them.

The course discusses various criteria of efficiency and equity, and analyses the relationships between these critiria, competitive equilibrium, and taxation policies.

Recommended reading:

For a part of the course one may use standard textbooks of microeconomics, such as those of Varian, Nicholson, or Hirshleifer. Always recommended are the more advanced classical books Theory of Value of Debreu, and General Competitive Analysis of Arrow and Hahn. More bibliography, especially concerning income inequality, will be given throughout the course.
